Panagiotis Kalas “Tsopanakos”
A folk satirical poet from Dimitsana whose verses preserve a popular voice of the revolutionary period.
Why it matters
He broadens the timeline from leaders and monuments to the spoken and sung culture of the people.
Panagiotis Kalas, known as “Tsopanakos”, was born in Dimitsana in 1789 and became known as a folk satirical poet of the Revolution period. His verses bring a different voice into the story of 1821: not only bishops, fighters and gunpowder, but also popular speech, irony, memory and song.
The later publication of his war songs connects Dimitsana’s revolutionary identity with printed patriotic literature.
