The EOT program in Dimitsana
In the late 1970s the EOT Traditional Settlements program connected restoration, tourism and heritage policy.
Why it matters
This entry is the missing bridge between settlement protection, restoration policy, tourism and the museum landscape of Aghianis.
From the late 1970s, the Traditional Settlements Department of the Greek National Tourism Organization sought to use Dimitsana’s traditional building stock for guesthouses and public uses. Twenty-nine buildings were offered, but only three were finally restored. The same study also identified the potential of the water-powered installations at Aghianis.
The program was the first organized attempt to treat architectural heritage as a development resource, and it indirectly prepared the ground for the later Open-Air Water Power Museum.
