The arrival of tourism in Dimitsana
By 1994–1995 tourism, restoration and guesthouses had become visible forces in the settlement.
Why it matters
This is the practical turning point when the protected settlement becomes a mountain cultural destination.
In March 1994, the Brotherhood’s newspaper announced that “tourism is knocking at the door” of Dimitsana. By 1995 building activity was already visible, with 130 newly built tiled roofs, while European and development programs supported the restoration of mansions and the creation of guesthouses.
The moment marks the transition from tourism as an aspiration to tourism as a force transforming the economy, architecture and public image of the village.
