The first major migration wave

From 1900 to 1922 Dimitsanites joined the wider migration current toward urban centres and America.

Why it matters

This migration wave explains the later role of the Dimitsanite diaspora, especially in development, memory and associations.

In the first decades of the 20th century, Dimitsana participated in the great migration movement toward Greek urban centres and the United States. Research in the Ellis Island records identified 172 Dimitsanites from 73 families, a number that probably understates the full extent of migration.

The migrants and returnees formed a durable diaspora. Their money, experience and emotional attachment to the village would later shape local benefaction, collective organization and the modern public life of Dimitsana.
