Why it matters

The building joins the School, the Library, Agia Kyriaki square, architecture and benefaction into one central civic landmark.

The present Library building was erected in 1845 in Agia Kyriaki square, on the site of the older School of Dimitsana. The work was funded by the national benefactor Nikolaos Makris and designed by the architect and professor Lysandros Kaftantzoglou.

Drinis places this building inside a wider educational and benefaction complex: Makris had migrated to Kishinev in Bessarabia, became active in the grain trade and also funded the Elementary School of 1851. The square therefore concentrates school, library, architecture and diaspora benefaction in one urban core.
