St. John Prodromos Monastery
A cliffside monastic refuge with centuries of spiritual history in the Lousios Gorge.
Why it matters
The cliffside monastery shows how the gorge became a protected landscape of worship, refuge and continuity.
Built into the eastern cliffs of the Lousios Gorge, 14 km from Dimitsana, the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist dates back to 12th-century hermitages. Formed into a cenobitic monastery around 1500–1600, its current northern wing was built in 1860. Known as Arcadia’s “Great Cave,” it still houses a small brotherhood.
