Aimialon Monastery
A 17th-century cliffside monastery blending spiritual devotion, local lore, and heroic sacrifice.
Why it matters
Its 17th-century foundation broadens the monastic network that shaped the religious geography around Dimitsana.
Founded in 1608 by Hieromonk Grigorios and nun Efpraxia Kontogianni, Aimyalon Monastery lies 2.5 km south of Dimitsana. Known for its Cretan School frescoes and legendary name origins, it also sheltered Kolokotronis’ relatives in 1806 during Ottoman persecution, where they met a heroic end after a fierce battle in the monastery’s wine press.
