Spiliotopoulos brothers restart powder mills

Return from Hydra to renovate and operate the old mills.

Why it matters

The brothers connect local technical skill and family initiative with the material needs of the Revolution.

At the Revolution’s outset, the Spiliotopoulos brothers returned from Hydra, renovated and ran the old powder mills around Dimitsana, supplying fronts across the Peloponnese and beyond.

Dimitsana’s gunpowder story should also be read technically: water-powered installations, local know-how and the Lousios landscape made production possible. Kolokotronis’ famous memory that the fighters had gunpowder because Dimitsana made it became the strongest historical phrase attached to the village.
