Water supply changes everyday life

The modern water-supply network began in the early 1950s and reached houses and shops by the late 1960s.

Why it matters

Water supply is a key everyday-life transformation: it marks the passage from public fountains and carrying water to the modern household.

Despite the water-rich landscape of the wider Lousios area, supplying water to the settlement was difficult because of Dimitsana’s elevation. The water-supply network began in the early 1950s using water from the Pefkani spring, while water reached houses and shops only in the late 1960s.

Before this change, public fountains such as Kato Vrysi, Mustafa, Veniou, Mallouchos and Ntoufexi structured daily routines and household labour.
