Dimitsana School Founded
From monastic learning to an organized educational institution in 18th-century Dimitsana.
Why it matters
It marks the moment when Dimitsana became a major center of Greek letters, linking monastic learning, community patronage and revolutionary-era education.
In 1764, the monks Gerasimos Gounas and Agapios Leonardos, both connected with Dimitsana, founded the Greek School of Dimitsana. The educational center that had been associated with the Philosophou Monastery moved into the village, where community support helped create a school capable of serving hundreds of students.
The School and its Library became the intellectual foundation of later Dimitsana memory. Before the Revolution, the Library held thousands of volumes; during the war, much of this paper culture was sacrificed for cartridges and ammunition.
