First protective designation of the settlement

The 1969 designation is the necessary precursor to understanding the later traditional-settlement protection of 1978.

By Ministerial Decision 9309/18.4.1969, published in Government Gazette 282/B/26.4.1969, Dimitsana was designated a settlement of historic and special natural beauty. The protection covered the settlement as a whole and aimed to preserve both its architectural and natural character.

This first designation preceded the 1978 traditional-settlement decree and opened a period in which the image of Dimitsana became a subject of state protection, local debate and, eventually, tourism value.
