Timeline entry: Dimitsana grows during the reign of Süleyman I

Why it matters

The growth shows Dimitsana becoming a stronger demographic and economic centre of mountainous Arcadia before the better-known 18th-century school and 19th-century revolutionary period.

In the register of the reign of Süleyman I, Dimitsana appears with 350 households and 97 unmarried adult men. Using the same demographic method as for 1461, Kayapınar estimates the population at about 1,847 people.

This means that, compared with the estimated 754 people recorded in 1461, Dimitsana had grown by about 150%. The register also shows a richer fiscal profile, with grain, wine must, mills, textile-related activity, beekeeping, silk production and market taxation.
