Ancient Gortys and the Lousios Sacred Landscape
Ancient Gortys adds sanctuary, healing and river-route context to the historical landscape around Dimitsana.
Why it matters
It broadens the timeline from village history to the ancient cultural geography of the Lousios valley.
Ancient Gortys, on the banks of the Lousios, was known for its sanctuary of Asclepius and impressive bath installations. Although it is not a Dimitsana settlement, it belongs to the same cultural landscape of river routes, sanctuaries, bridges and paths that visitors encounter today in the Lousios Gorge.
Placed beside Teuthis, Gortys helps the timeline show that Dimitsana’s story is part of a wider Arcadian network rather than an isolated mountain village history.
