Dimitsana Torch Relay 2026

On the eve of the national celebration of 25 March, Dimitsana once again became a river of light. On 24 March 2026, residents, students, visitors, and local associations took part in the historic torch procession through the stone alleys of the village, carrying handmade torches and wearing traditional dress.

The Lampadidromies of Dimitsana are among the village’s most evocative commemorative customs. Their meaning is closely tied to Dimitsana’s identity as the “gunpowder storehouse” of the Greek War of Independence, a place where memory is not presented only through monuments and books but also through living ritual, movement, sound, and fire.

The 2026 celebration highlighted the continuity of the custom and the strength of local participation. As the procession moved through the historic settlement, the image of torchlight against stone houses, churches, and narrow streets transformed the commemoration into a collective act of remembrance.
