Philosofou Monastery
One of Greece’s oldest monastic monuments.
Why it matters
It connects the Lousios Gorge with monastic life, learning and the long spiritual memory of the region.
Philosofou Monastery, in the Lousios Gorge near Dimitsana, consists of a 10th-century “Old Monastery” founded by scholar Ioannis Lambardopoulos and a 17th-century “New Monastery.” Known as a “Secret School” during Ottoman rule, it produced prominent clergy and leaders. Rich in Byzantine architecture, frescoes, and Cretan icons, it remains a revered heritage site.
