The New Philosophou Monastery
The newer katholikon of Philosophou Monastery is founded in 1691 and decorated in 1693.
Why it matters
It links the medieval monastic origin of Philosophou with the later educational and cultural activity that led toward the Dimitsana School.
The New Philosophou Monastery was founded near the older cliff monastery in 1691, and its katholikon was decorated with wall paintings in 1693. The newer complex helped sustain monastic life, learning and cultural memory in the Lousios Gorge after the medieval rock-cut foundation.
This entry completes the Philosophou story by distinguishing the 10th-century Old Monastery from the 17th-century New Monastery.
