4th Summer School for the Cultural Heritage of Rural Areas
The 4th Summer School for the Cultural Heritage of Rural Areas was held in Dimitsana from 23 to 30 July 2023 under the theme “Working Together with Communities: Designing and Implementing Actions to Safeguard Intangible Cultural Heritage”.
Theme and programme
The 2023 school formed part of the events marking 20 years since the adoption of UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its programme combined lectures with three practical workshops on documenting intangible cultural heritage, completing an inventory form and designing safeguarding interventions.
Parallel activities included the performance “Dimitsana, a Place from Memory”, a guided visit to the Open-Air Water Power Museum, an introduction to the natural and cultural landscape of the Lousios, and a visit to the Antonopoulos Mansion, the planned home of the Historical and Folklore Museum of Dimitsana.
Organisation
The school was organised by the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and the Dimitsana Interconference Cultural Centre, with support from the Region of Peloponnese, the Municipality of Gortynia, the Open-Air Water Power Museum of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, Mainalon Social Cooperative Enterprise and other local organisations and residents.
