3rd Summer School for the Cultural Heritage of Rural Areas
The 3rd Summer School for the Cultural Heritage of Rural Areas was held in Dimitsana from 24 to 31 July 2022 under the theme “Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage: Theory, Practice, Ethics”. It resumed the annual series after a necessary two-year interruption caused by the pandemic.
Programme
The programme brought together lectures by specialists in folklore, anthropology, cultural management, museums, heritage interpretation and archival documentation. Participants explored the relationship between safeguarding policy, community participation, ethical practice and the interpretation of natural and cultural heritage.
Activities in and around Dimitsana included a village tour guided by local children, a visit to the Open-Air Water Power Museum, a tour of an exhibition dedicated to photographer Michalakis Panagopoulos, the storytelling performance “Departures” based on the Oral Testimonies and Life Stories Archive of the Dimitsana Cultural and Conference Centre, and an introduction to the natural and cultural landscape of the Lousios.
Organisation
The school was organised by the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Dimitsana Cultural and Conference Centre, together with the Region of Peloponnese, the Municipality of Gortynia, the Open-Air Water Power Museum of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, Mainalon Social Cooperative Enterprise and other local organisations and residents.
