Founded in 1608 by Hieromonk Grigorios and nun Efpraxia Kontogianni, Aimyalon Monastery lies 2.5 km south of Dimitsana. Known for its Cretan School frescoes and legendary name origins, it also sheltered Kolokotronis’ relatives in 1806 during Ottoman persecution, where they met a heroic end after a fierce battle in the monastery’s wine press.
